The SPRINT study is a randomized controlled trial. The aim is to evaluate the effect of physical exercise at different modalities and intensities on the immune system in older adults. Moreover, the effects of resistance exercise (RE) on inflammation and chronic low-grade inflammation (CLIP) will be investigated both in the circulation (blood) and peripheral tissue (skin tissue).
Older adults aged 65 years or more are randomly assigned to one of the three intervention groups: intensive strength training (IST), strength endurance training (SET) or stretching exercises (active control group). Participants will exercise for 3 months, 2 à 3 times a week. After this training period the participants will be offered the possibility to continue the training for another 3 months. All participants are assessed at 6 weeks, 3, 6, 9 and 12 months after baseline in order to appreciate the long-term effects of physical exercise.
The results of this project will allow us to provide new insights in the complex interaction between physical exercise and immunosenescence as well as to present evidence-based guidelines for exercise in elderly persons to counter CLIP.
