Early detection of community-dwelling, older, Flemish adults with a suicide risk - a mixed-methods, action-research study.
This project is funded by FWO – fellowship (Beau Nieuwenhuijs)
An increasing number of older adults is dying by suicide, as a result of population ageing, combined with high suicide rates in older adults. Early detection of older adults with a suicide risk is imperative to save lives and prevent suffering. However, this is hampered by a lack of research aimed at understanding the suicidal process, and needs of primary care and community actors in early detection of older adults at risk. This scientific gap is reflected in the Flemish Suicide Prevention Action Plan. This project aims to improve the early detection of older, Flemish adults with a suicide risk. The project adopts a mixed-method study design, using quantitative and qualitative methods, informed by an action research approach. Due to the scarcity of research with older adults, and the high practical need in Flanders, this project could significantly advance late-life suicide research and prevention
